The fuel oil storage and service tanks of Costa Concordia are located on top of the inner bottom of the hull and a safe distance away from the exposed hull sides and are therefore undamaged. Their air pipes are apparently ending high up in the deck house funnel and as no oil spilled out after capsize and 90° heel, there was no risk that oil will leak out in the vessel's present half sunk position with 60° heel. The fuel oil tanks just inside the exposed port side are therefore very easy to pump empty.
